Signs of Mold in Your Home

Mold is nearly everywhere. It’s a very common fungus and is present in the air, on surfaces, and in our homes. For most of us, it’s not a huge concern unless your home becomes riddled with toxic mold. If this occurs, it can mean huge problems for the structure of your home, your pocketbook, and your health. If mold is present in your home, it’s best to deal with the problem as soon as possible. Smaller areas of mold are much easier to deal with than huge areas. Here are some signs to watch for if you are concerned that mold is present in your home.

Someone in Your Household is Dealing With an Increase of Allergy or Asthma Symptoms

Mold affects different people in different ways. If your allergy or asthma symptoms have become increasingly worse while spending time in your home, this may be a sign there is mold in your home. Anyone who is sensitive to mold can end up very sick if the problem is not addressed. Some light symptoms of mold sensitivity include skin inflammation, sore throat, and nasal congestion. Those who are allergic to mold or who may have a weakened immune system can end up vomiting or with a lung infection.

You See Mold

Watch for dark spots in your home. Sometimes people mistake mold for dirt, so look carefully. There are several different types of mold. the most common are Cladosporium, aspergillus, and Stachybotrys atra, which is also known as black mold. Look for signs of mold on fabrics, clothes, furniture, inside closets, in cabinets, on the wallpaper, in windowsills, and in shoes. Pay close attention to any areas of your home that are humid, warm, and moist. Bathrooms are particularly important to keep an eye on. Look at walls and ceilings and note any dark spots. People who are exposed to black mold over a long period of time can become seriously ill with internal bleeding and even mental deterioration.

You Notice Water Damage

Water damage leads to mold. If you experience a leak or other problem that involves moisture infiltrating your structure, it’s highly possible that mold is present or will be soon. It’s very important to completely dry any areas that have become wet in your home. This is especially important with carpet and drywall. Mold loves to get into drywall that sits wet for a long period of time. The only way to get rid of mold in drywall is to completely remove it and install new drywall, which is a costly venture.
