Basic Tips for Staying Safe in the Sunshine

Besides feeling amazing on the skin, the warm rays of the sun are an instant mood-booster. Sunlight also allows the body to produce vitamin D which everyone needs. However, taking full advantage of the sun means protecting your skin against harmful UV rays. Here are some basic tips to stay safe while enjoying the sunshine.

Slather on the Sunscreen

You’ve heard it a million times, but you need to wear sunscreen every day. Not only does it protect you from skin cancer, but it also prevents fine lines and wrinkles. In fact, a staggering 90% of skin damage is due to the sun, so wear your sunscreen and reapply often.

Create Shade

If your yard doesn’t have a lot of trees, you need to create shade yourself. Good options are a patio table umbrella, or an ample deck cover for widespread protection. These sturdy covers are waterproof, colorful and offer protection from the sun’s heat.

Use Eye Protection

Protecting yourself from dangerous UV rays is the perfect excuse to go sunglasses shopping. When looking for a pair of sunglasses, look for a label that protects you from 100% of UVA and UVB rays. While you might be tempted to buy darker lenses, they offer no more protection than lighter colors.

Wear a Hat

Whether you’re gardening in your backyard or going for a hike, wearing a hat makes a huge difference. Floppy hats are perfect for breezy days on the beach, plus they protect your neck. If you’re participating in more physical activities, a baseball cap is better than nothing.

Spending time in the sun has many benefits such as lifting your mood and helping you get enough vitamin D. To minimize your risk of skin damage while outside, always use sunscreen, eye protection and create a shady spot wherever possible.
